A farmer combines wheat in Salisbury Township, Lancaster County, Pa., on July 3, 2026. Mature wheat stands ready for harvest in Salisbury Township, Lancaster County, Pa., on July 3, 2026. With 320 acres of wheat to combine, Randy Rhoads hoped all the pieces would fall into place for this year’s harvest. It began in May when the wheat was flowering and the rain stayed away, limiting the risk of mycotoxin. On the last 90 acres he cut, Rhoads said the moisture was 12% and only one field had some wheat that was down, but it wasn’t an issue. “Last year we had rain at the wrong time, when the head is developing seed and it starts to dry, then gets moisture and soaks it up,” he said.
